Turtledove rotates through many points-of-view, from Caesar to slaves and soldiers, to give a panoramic look at the epic battle of Teutoburg Forest, laced with telling details of ancient military life and strategy and lightened with humorous interludes. Sure that he is headed for further glory, Varus is unaware that crafty Prince Armenius, who serves in the Roman army but secretly seethes in indignation at Rome's plans to make Germany another conquered territory, is planning a massive revolt. Caesar appoints Publius Quinctilius Varus, formerly a successful governor of Syria, to become the new governor of Germany, and Varus sets off bolstered by three legions from the overextended Roman army. Alternate history icon Turtledove probes the intrigues and battles surrounding Roman Emperor Augustus Caesar's attempts to control uprisings in Germanic lands circa A.D. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Becoming the Spoils by J.L. MerrowBasically his fears of coming out have caused him to pretty much bury that side of himself, never acting on his homosexuality, or even really accepting it in himself. We are talking door barricaded, underground bunker kind of closet. But the even bigger problem is that Tim is quite firmly in the closet. First off, Matt lives with his boyfriend Steve, so he is not available. So great that Tim finds himself falling for Matt, a problem with big complications. Matt and Tim hit it off right away, spending all day working alone together and forming a great friendship. There he meets the adorable, shaggy, incredibly clumsy Matt Berridge who does the bike repairs. So Tim heads over from London to Southampton, staying in Jay’s house and taking over managing the shop. Jay has broken his leg and needs someone to run his bike shop while he recovers. After his losing his job and having his marriage end, the timing is perfect when Tim Knight gets a call from his brother Jay. Shortly before finishing his studies, Murakami opened the coffeehouse 'Peter Cat' which was a jazz bar in the evening in Kokubunji, Tokyo with his wife. His first job was at a record store, which is where one of his main characters, Toru Watanabe in Norwegian Wood, works. Murakami studied drama at Waseda University in Tokyo, where he met his wife, Yoko. He grew up reading a range of works by American writers, such as Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan, and he is often distinguished from other Japanese writers by his Western influences. Since childhood, Murakami has been heavily influenced by Western culture, particularly Western music and literature. His work has been described as 'easily accessible, yet profoundly complex'. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Bridget zinn booksIf you’re in the mood for nuanced world building and a focus on Kyra’s work as a poisoner, you are going to be disappointed. There is NOTHING wrong with some well done fluff, and I had a big grin on my face the whole way through, so what is better than that? Thankfully, I went in with fairly low expectations and a feeling that the book would be flufftastic. It’s all going to depend on your expectations and what you’re into. Though I truly delighted in every page of Poison, I can see where it might not be everybody’s cup of cocoa. Kyra is not your typical murderer, and she’s certainly no damsel-in-distress-she's the lovable and quick-witted hero of this romantic novel that has all the right ingredients to make teen girls swoon. Kyra is determined to get herself a second chance (at murder), but will she be able to find and defeat the princess before Hal and the army find her? She’s armed with her vital potions, a too-cute pig, and Fred, the charming adventurer she can’t stop thinking about. Now a fugitive instead of a hero, Kyra is caught in a game of hide-and-seek with the king’s army and her potioner ex-boyfriend, Hal. Faced with no other choice, Kyra decides to do what she does best: poison the kingdom’s future ruler, who also happens to be her former best friend.īut, for the first time ever, her poisoned dart…misses. Sixteen-year-old Kyra, a highly-skilled potions master, is the only one who knows her kingdom is on the verge of destruction-which means she’s the only one who can save it. 5/29/2023 0 Comments J elle ashes of goldAn advocate for marginalized voices in both publishing and her community, J. Elle was born in Houston, Texas, and is a first-generation college student with a bachelors in journalism and MA in educational administration and human development. When a betrayal sends her into a tailspin, Rue must decide who to trust and how to be the leader that her people deserve, because if she doesn’t, it isn’t just Yiyo that will be destroyed-it will be Rue herself. Elle is the author of Ashes Of Gold (Wings Of Ebony 2). Yet even on Yiyo Peak, Rue is a misfit with half a foot back in Houston and a heart that is half human, half god, she’s not sure she’s the right person to lead the fight to reclaim a glorious past. Rue vows that when she reunites with them, she will find a way to return the magic that the Chancellor has stolen from her father’s people. Girls from East Row break themselves out.īut getting free and finding her friends is only half the battle. Girls from East Row pick themselves back up when they fall. Rue has no memory of how she ended up locked in a basement prison without her magic or her allies. In the “thrilling…masterful” ( Kirkus Reviews, starred review) conclusion to the Wings of Ebony duology, which #1 New York Times bestselling author Nicole Yoon calls “bold, inventive, big-hearted, and deeply perceptive,” Rue makes her final stand to reclaim her people’s stolen magic. |
